Lists of websites are usually sorted in categories and you have to chose the right one for your own website if you want to sign it up for joning the list. If you design your website according to its contents from the beginning it is often easier afterwards to find the right categorie without problems:
 
It may seem unusual to pay attention to the stories and planned topics of thwe internet pages when designing a website - after all we usually think about visual things when speaking about a new design...
 
To better understand how to plan a design according to the available content you can compare the structure of your website to the building of a library and your stories and topics to the books that are contained in the library. There are shelves inside the building that are sorted and labeled according to groups and subgroups so that later on one can easily and quickly find the books insides these shelves.
 
If you plan a library or the structure of a website merely with the visual appearence in your mind you will soon get problems when you try to put the books or contents inside the shelves: Maybe some books are to big to fit the space in the shelves, while others are so small that they leave big gaps in between. Furthermore you will find out that you have so many books about some topics that there are not enough shelves for them in the library while other shelves are more or less empty...
 
The forementioned problems can easily be avoided if you look at the available books before you plan the library. In the same way one should plan the design of a website according to the available stories and contents and it is best to build the test layouts with already written real texts. If there are no contents available already it is better to first write some stories before one starts with the deign of the website - you can only know the space required on the internet pages and the amount of stories for different topics if you have real texts at hand.
 
If you already use real stories instead of dummy texts for the building of your test designs you have the further advantage that the programming of the pages can make better usage of structural elements like heading tags from the beginning. This way you get internet pages that can be viewed more reliable in differents browsers and that are also neatly arranged for the website visitors since the focus of the design is the text und not the visual appearence.
 
The method of planning the design of a website according to the content of the planned stories is very efficient and usefull but it also has some disadvantages one should be aware of: Often this method produces sites that are very plan and text oriented that might be visually unattractive or confusing to the reader. And one should always be aware that the structure of a new design should allow additions and changes in the future easily if the content of the optical orientation of the website should change.
