The Celts were early conservationists, because they strongly believed that every part of the scenery holds its own life and should be considered as holy. They settled in Europe from 800 B.C. to 900 A.D. and their civilization has been based on the belief in a magically animated earth and its relation to the own clan or tribe. The cycle of agriculture was vital for the Celtic culture and the festivals which were celebrated during the year were especially important to those who were born shortly before a certain festive day because they took a leading role in this particular festival. Birthdays therefore in general had a very important meaning and many Celtic legends referred to the birth of deities and heroes and the Celts were convinced that they shared the supernatural powers of these mythological beings if they had the luck to be born on their birthday. In their magic system the darkness of night brought the Celts closer to the mysterious Otherworld, where gods, goddesses, fairies and the dead exist. The natural attributes being inherent in a certain time of day or season, were respected by the Celts just as much as they observed which plants, animals and weather conditions were connected with a certain period because in that way they defined the special abilities of newborn children and predicted the future. The Celtic birth charms of this collection can either be worn to stress your own Celtic birthday, or if another pendant is chosen, to manifest its spirit within you. In former times magic birth pendants were worn by the Celts to influence destiny and to emphasize personal traits, just as astrological jewelry is used by a lot of people today.
Keyne: People whose birthday falls between the 2nd and the 24th of October are born under the Celtic sign of the king's daughter Keyne. They are very often particularly interested in knowledge and wisdom and are favored by luck. Keyne was the daughter of the Welsh king Brychan and lived near a wood that was infested with poisonous snakes, which in this narration stand for the Celtic belief, because the snake was an important symbol to the Celts which was used in many carvings and magic jewelry. Keyne resiled to this woodland to follow there, as a virgin, the Christian path of virtue. Her priests supported her and transformed the snakes into stone thus helping Christianity to win.

About us
We were always fascinated by pieces of jewelry designed according to historical artwork and magical and other old motifs are a main area of our jewelry collection until today. Nowadays we all are surrounded by designs and motifs from all over the world which we usually choose according to visual aspects without considering the original meaning and symbolism of the various depictions. For sure the beauty of the different designs and materials is a good reason for selecting them but the affinity to a special piece of jewelry or art craft can be enhanced if one knows its deeper meaning and its origin. For this reason we always placed value on the accurate representation and information explaining the various pieces of jewelry in our collection.
Since the beginning of mankind jewelry served several different purposes. Already before the invention of money it was for example used as a kind of currency, as a status symbol or as a valuable asset that even could be passed on to future generations. Many pieces of jewelry also had a functional purpose like it is the case with fastenings for clothes, safety pins and belt buckles. However, at a more spiritual level the jewelry also had a symbolic meaning, showed the affiliation to and the status in a social group, and was worn for the protection from evil or simply to show one's own taste.
Since jewelry is such a diverse cultural asset the meaning of a given piece can depend on the point of view and beliefs of its creator. For example many cultures developed pieces of jewelry showing to others whether its wearer is married or single: In our Western world these are the wedding rings while in African countries e.g. special bracelets or necklaces are worn for this purpose. Whether we are talking about weddings jewelry or talismans and amulets that were used for protection - often the decorations and materials determine the symbolic meaning of a piece of jewelry.
Not only the used symbols and decorations differ strongly between the cultures - a huge number of different materials were also used in the course of time. In the beginnings especially shells and pearls of wood and bone were used, because these natural materials were readily available and could easily be processed. Later the precious metals silver and gold became more and more important and also the use of precious stones increased. Nowadays all possible materials are used to underline the meaning of a piece of jewelry even further thereby creating pendants and other jewelry that could not be designed using traditional materials.
Also the piece of jewelry on this page http://www.aval onstreasury.com /Avalons-Treasu ry-Product-Page s-02/Avalons-Tr easury-Avalons- Treasury-Charms -Keyne-LH-BC13. html shows a unique combination of material and symbolism.
